How does CBT work?
Cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT as it is known for short is a short term therapy technique that helps by changing thought patterns. CBT can help people with stress, complicated relationships, past trauma, grief, and many other common life challenges.
CBT works under the understanding that the way people think and interpret life events can alter how they behave and therefore how they feel. CBT is a goal oriented approach which looks at specific problems and it needs the person taking part in the therapy to have an active involvement in order for it to succeed.
It is also time limited, this means you know when a course of therapy will end so you can budget more easily and also have an idea what to expect. A course of therapy is usually 15-20 one to one sessions long, but can be considerably shorter. It can also take place in group sessions, this can be especially helpful to enable people to share with others who have been through similar experiences!
CBT requires the practitioner and the client to work together which eventually helps you as an individual become your own therapist.
